Women and The Odyssey

From the way he describes Penelope, would you say that Homer’s attitude towards women seems old-fashioned or modern? Explain.

From the way Homer describes Penelope, it seems as if Homer's attitude towards women os old-fasioned because he wanted Peneloe to love and be happy that Odyusseus was home from a long journey.

Homers attitude is old fashion becasue the women is crying and he made her do that casue he stayed out late and she wondered where he was.

Old-fashioned. Today women stand up agaist men and fight for themselves. Personally if I had been Penelope I would have told the suitors to get out of my home and that I could rule my kingdom myself.

In my opinion i would say that it is old fashioned because he loves her and wants her to love him and always wants her to be happy

The way that Homer describes Penelope, he makes it sound like his attitude towards women is old fashion. Penelope had no control over her home.

Paul I like yours, its short.

I think that it is a little old fashioned because of pretty much what Ivy said.

I agree with what Sabrina said too.

I think Homer's attitued toward women is old-fashioned. He describes Penelope waiting for her husband for twenty years. A modern day womam would have looked for a new husband way before that.

From the way Homer puts Penelope in a certain status in the story I would say he thinks of women in a old-fashioned way because he just has her doing certain women work and probably not thinking that to highly of her than just a queen.

Paul i think u should go into a little more detail

I believe its kind of a mix. She wasn't totally helpless against the suitors you guys!! She did postpone the decision for a long time, and would have kept it up too if that maid hadn't betrayed her and told the suitors of what she was doing. But it is old fashioned too, because she really did have no control of her own home... At my house, my mom controls everything!! X . X

Darren, I agree with you.

No one today would wait twenty years for someone to come back.
They would have given up hope along time ago

I think its old-fashion because Odysseus and Penelope was remarried over a test.

His way of thinking is old-fashioned because he is still thinking that women are the lesser being.

i think that homer is very old fashioned because in the world today his wife would have left him but in the Odyssey she didnt she stayed with him through thick and thin.

to Jordon,
Yes he made it sound like Penelope had no choice but to remarry because the suitors were already asking for her hand.

Homer's attitude toward women seems a little old-fashioned because he speaks in a way to her that you would not hear someone from this time say.

Not nessarilly Darren. Women just wouldn't have let him being gone controll her life she would have picked herself up and go on still hoping for him to come back but not letting her life go down too.

I think homer thinks women are old-fashioned he wants her to love the odysseus is back.

Penelope stayed at home, cooking, cleaning, and awaiting for her husband's arrrical. Therefore homer's attitude toward women is old-fashioned. Today's women have jobs.

I would say old fashioned because penplope had no controll over her home and now womens can make a decision on there on and rule ther own kingdom.

Paul, although I agree with you, don't you feel you could have put more effort into it? Think OUTSIDE the box! :P

I believe that the way Homer described Penelope, he had old-fashioned beliefs. I mean, most women now-a-days would have moved on or got off their lazy behinds and went and searched for their man. But, you can't blame Homer. I mean, he lived in the time era when women were nothing BUT... well women. A female. Someone who cleaned the house and took care of the children. A WEAKER SEX

KEH said...

By the way, in my last post, women are no longer the weaker sex! :P

I think his attitude towards women is old-fashion because the women don't speak up for themselves and just listen to what they are told. Today's women speak up for themselves and would fight if they have to.

I believe that Homer's view on women was old fashioned because he never mentioned Penelope working a job or doing anything else except staying at home and loving Odysseus.

Old fashion as if women had no rights or say in a house hold. The men ran the household and was only speak to him no one could talk out or say anything.. OLd fasIon like before WW1 and womens rights and the right to vote.

Old fasioned because it sounds like the women do every thing for the men and they dress like olden times too.

i agree with ivy-h.

Yes it is old fashioned because of the way they talk and dress in this story. The women did everything for the men back then and we dont now. Plus, today if you were on a voyage for 20 years we have technology where you could let someone know you were ok and you wouldnt have to worry your family to death.

I believe that his attitude is old-fashined because he is kind of demanding when he tells her to be happy that he is home for a long 20 year journey. But still at the same time he treats her with respect so i guess its kinda both.

corey,

I agree he shouldn't have done that to penelope because she is such a nice person to be treated like that not even a visit.

How Homer describes Penelope it show that his attitude toward women is old fasioned. You can't expect for someone to love you and be happy if you were away for twenty years in a modern world.

britbratdacoolcat said...

darren i agree with you. today we would not wait on a man to come home for 20 years.

paul, i think you could have been a little more detailed about your answer. however, i do agree with you

From the way Homer treated Penelope, I would say Odysseus's attitude toward women is old-fashioned. I believe this because his ways of assuring Penelope he was really Odysseus was a litle old fashoined.
