You might be struck by lightning, Your boat could be destroyed, you could fall overboard and end up on an island, you could also face a storm at sea. Theres many things that could happen at sea.

The circumstances of Odysseus's journey that could happen in real life could be someone getting angry at someone else for slaughtering their cattle.
People can also die at sea as a result of lightening striking their ship.

In my opinion;

In life if you are selfish to people, they will be be selfish back to you. Say if someone says," hey can i have one of your cookies because i am really hungry"
and u tell them no, chances are that when *you* are hungry they wont give You one..

"TREAT OTHERS THE WAY YOU WANT TO BE TREATED"

Jordan you were too literal.

You could be out at sea and get into a sea storm. Your boat could get struck by lighting. Then after all of that you could get thrown overboard.

You could get lost and get shipwrecked on an island. You could have gotten lost in a storm, or some heavy fog. Like Jordan said also, you could fall overboard, but I don't know if you can be LURED overboard like the Sirens try to do.

You could be struck by lightning or your boat can be destroyed and you could fall overboard. You could always end up lost on an island. So there are many things that could happen to you in the middle of the sea.

In one way the circumtances of this story really happening is very low because it deals with the greek beliefs in which we definently do not believe in but one way this might happen is by putting it in the perspective of our time right now and telling of the difficulty of getting home during the war such as a solider may come upon during his time serving his country just like Odysseus himself.

On a real life journey, you may be struck by lightning. Your ship might get destroyed and you will have to drift in the sea.

Jordan said...

Zach what do you mean by that?

Like Scylla and Chrybdis you'll have to pick between bad decisions and you may lose some near friends or an item with sentimental value.

i kindof agree with u too dj

KENDAL yours says the same thing as mine.

I think the term what goes around comes around is exactly what odysseus's recieves in his journey from his men.Anybody can go around and only care about himself and be mean and disrepectful to everybody, but if your going to live on this earth you mine as well be nice to people who are nice to you.

The circumstances of odyesseus's that could have been real was, that his men went aganist his word. About eatting the cattle after he said not to.

I dont think that really much of anyhthing that has happened in the book could actually happen. there is not such thing as greek mythological creatures that eat six of your men, or a siren, unless that could be contributed to the bermuda triangle. the only realistic things would be what jordan said, the things that happen naturally at sea, or maybe later in the Odyssey when he has to murder the suitors to avenge his honor, but that doesnt really happen anymore either.

Any of the things in the story could happen.
You could get hit by lightening,
You could be thrown overboard a boat, or your boat could crash. You could also get lost, and your going to experience death, (as in family and friends dieing)

There are some difficult times in life, like there was in the story.

Something from the story is that everyone has to make choices. Some of those choices could be during life and death situations. Another thing that can happen from the story is that anyone can be struck by lightning at any time.

Albert,

Well yes, I don't believe in the mythical creatures and stuff.
& I don't believe that thats ever going to happen

but some of these things could possibly happen.

like getting struck by lighting.

Your boat could get destroyed in some water, you can get sturk by lighting, or even someone getting mad because someone killed their cattle and that person trying to get them back.

Alot of things that happened in the story can happen on a real life journey... A whirlpool can come by and destroy your boat, your animal can get killed or even you get killed. YOU could make someone mad and they could want to kill you.

Alot of which has happened in Odysseus's journey can very well hapen in real-life journeys. Such as when Odysseus makes the mistakes he does, he uses his very strong, intelligent, convincing mind to get out of things. In life, people do that. Whether it be getting in trouble or trying to solve a problem.

in my opinion alot of the things that happened to odysseus could happen to you but in a smaller portion. as long as you treat others like you would want to be treated in life you will probably get pretty far in life.

Jordan~ wow!!! pretty intense but very true!!!!lol

LOL, Zack is right... the Golden Rule.

Everyone is saying the same thing Jordan said, witht the lightning, destroyed boat, and the falling overboard...

Daniel, good answer, you will have to pick between decisions, a bad one, or a hopeless one.

Albert is right too, not many of the things in the Odyssey can happen.

you may go through many struggles but you can get out of it with a little common sense. chose the right path or direction. think before you act and you will be okay

Some of the circumstance that Odysseus went through like having somone mad at him because he did something wrong and people dieing because there ship sinked or got destroyed, these all could also happen in real life, maybe not the same way as they happened to Odysseus but very close.

Anonymous said...

The circumstances of Odysseus's journey so far that might happen on real-life journy could be Odysseus wanting to go to the siren when he couldnt. Sometimes in life you want things that you cant have. It may be for health reason or just social. Either way, if you be patient, you may achieve your desiire.

Zach L., i like your comparison of the cookie. You are exactly right. But, do you think Helios is more selfish than Odysseus in the scheme of things?

This is easy Odysseus journey of The Odysseusy show s a rela characteristic in alot of novels and superheros stories. Escaping death, using wits to surpass strength, leaders with courageous stories, amazing strength, and stories of against all odds.

Homer puts a lot of real like examples in philsophic terms. Temptions of the sirens and hunger. Who can last and can over tke their desires. Many can go agianst umbelievable odds and wins as show in many cases in sports. Odysseusy plays a role in many homes, sporting arenas , and real life heros like Firefighters and police officers

You could fall overboard and end up shipwrecked on a unknown island. And that people and their boats can get struck by lightning. A sea storm can even occur.

Anonymous said...

As everybody else said your ship could be destroyed by a storm. It is also possible to be struck by lightning. Also a sea storm is probable of happening also.

Anonymous said...

Nichole, be more specific on your circumstance. I agree some of the circumstance could have happened but i smaller portions. Still, what circumstance?

A circumstance of Odysseus's journey that could occur in a real life situation is that someone didnt follow directions and eating some thing that you are not supposed to eat. Like Odysseus men eating the cattle.I also like Zach L. comparison to the cookie.

Anonymous said...

I beleive what everyone said is right but there are not just physical things in the story that could happen in real life there is all other things like how Odysseus thought about his men and what his feelings were.

Anonymous said...

Zach your comparison to the cookie hit it right on the head. It helped me understand the situation a lot better.

Well you could be going on a journey like on a camping trip and get stuck in a thunderstorm. I know i did! Well, you could also be traveling to another place on a boat and get stuck in a thunderstorm and get struck by lightning. You could encounter a animal such as a bear and trick it into not fighting you. There are many things that could happen to you that happened to Odysseus and his men.

The circumstances that we face in life that is similar to odysseus journey is that he trated his men bad, and in selfish ways but he should know treat others how you want to be treated cause if you treat others bad and selfish they are going to treat you the same way!!!!

Keonna,
I definately agree with you Odysseus is on a power trip and only his men suffer for it.

Not alot of these circumstances would happen now but there is a possibility that some of them could actually happen. Some of these include: storms at sea, boat problems, you could make alot of people furious, you could get on someone's bad side for doing them wrong(the cattle incident), etc.

Anonymous said...

well somethings that have happened in the journey of odysseus would happen in real-life journeys.
like in this world there are people that are curious just like odysseus. and we may not get like odysseus did when he was listening to the songs of the sirens but we do end up like that sometimes in life. like when a man has a wife and he goes out to a club with his friends just for a few beers and he meets a woman there and he just cant resist her and he ends up cheating on his wife but then he realizes later in life when he has a happy family with his wife that he shouldnt of done that to her but now its too late to apologize to her and tell her what really happened because by now all your doing is trying to get yourself out of a web of lies. and dont think im saying guys are the only one who does these things because females do to. but thats the only thing i can think of when it comes to a real-life example of the sirens. and another example about helios's cattle would be when he made his men vow not to eat them but they did so anyways, its almost like a little kid wanting that cookie that he/she promised there mom they wouldnt get but they were just so hungry for cookies that they couldnt resist it. but then later on when dinner comes and he/she isnt hungry they fce the consequences from there mom for not eating dinner.

sorry miss singleton but the first example is all i could think of.

The circumstances that happened in the story that might happen in real life is starving to death and eating a cattle even though you were told not too.

Anonymous said...

zach. good point.
but i dont believe that odysseus was ever really selfish in the story.

Anonymous said...

matthew smith you are right his men are dying but he begged for mercy and kept right on going to reach his goal. he doesnt let that stop him from reaching hes goal

Anonymous said...

danielle you are also right you have to do what you have to do to survive. but what if there were no cattle to eat

Anonymous said...

jamie.
youre completely right.
its just that not EVERYTHING in the story can happen like the mythological creature thing.

Anonymous said...

Realization their alot of possible outcomes. What if, the Odsseusy shows the what if gone wrong in the boat but right on the paper where reading. Life obstacles can only be experience to see if it was right or worng if we experience the obstacles ourselves

Anonymous said...

Some of the things that happen in The Odyssey are, in my opinion, simply forced into a different way of the way life goes in real life.
For example (from many life-threatening experiences of mine), when I was eight, in Hawaii, I got planted under our river raft and had to regain control of my own body and hold my breath and think of a way to keep myself from getting sucked into the deep Pacific after a 6 foot water fall. IT WAS NOT FUN.
In the Odyssey, Odysseus and his crew might've gotten thrown overboard or something of that sort. You never know.
The point is, a real life odyssey is only as factual as its foremost experience(i think).

A.S.Hodges said...

Jamie you are right, you could end up getting struck by lightning, the only problem though, is that you would have to have some REALLY bad luck.

Anonymous said...

Some things that has happened on his journey that could happen in real life is when the crew was struck by lightning. Another example is if someone got angry when they slaughtered his cows. You can also be thrown overboard. So many things can go wrong when your at sea.

Ke'onna said...

i think most of the things that happened in the story can happen in real life like odysseus had to taike a difficult journey and we all have to do that sometimes.

Anonymous said...

The circumstance of Odysseus's Journey that can happen in real life is someone getting mad, because you killed some of their cattle.
