Categorizing Challenges

Not all of the obstacles Odysseus faced on his long journey home were equally difficult to overcome. Which obstacle do you think presented him with the greatest challenge? Using details from the text, explain your reasoning. You may want to compare the incident you choose with others from The Odyssey. You may also want to identify the internal and external factors that contributed to the difficulty.

I think the obstacle that presented him the most difficulty was arriving home and penelope not beliveing him. He fought through many obstacles just to get home and see penelope, but when he finally arrived pepelope didn't think it was him! I would have been very upset to have riskd my life for someone and then that person not even belive me.

i think the most difficult challenge Odysseus faced was proving to his wife that he was really home and not an imposter. He did the challenge of the bow and said things that only he would say.

The Obstalcles that i think that Odyssues faced on his journey was when he was reunited with his wife but she didn't belive him><. That would make me so mad that after all this time it took for me to get back home my own wife didn't even think it was me. The Internal factors was that he chose himself to be exposed not disgused as he was in the beginning.

Sarah You have a very good point there<___<.

What I think Odysseus had the most of a struggle with is when he met his wife for the first time in twenty years. Seeing someone not being able to say it's you,and them not recognizing you at all. Someone you haven't seen in years denying its is just sad.

One obstacle that probably was the hardest to overcome was getting Penelope to believe that he was himself, being that he was disguised as an old beggar. He had to go through the test of the bow. The bow was his, but it was sitting at his old home and he hadn't used it in a LOOOONG time because The Odyssey took forever. He probably wasn't used to it anymore because he had used so many different weapons on the Journey. Internally he was probably hurt because Penelope didn't believe him, but on the outside he was strong and stood up for himself and showed her that he was Odysseus.

I agree with Sarah.

I believe that it would be very difficult to have someone that you love not believe you.

Everyone has posted about the same thing so this applys to every one.............

You all have made good points about Odysseus and Penelope.

I think that the biggest obstacle was when he came home and his own wife didn't beleive him. he had been through so much and when he got home no one beleived that it was him.

I think when Odysseus had to sacrifice six of his men was the most devestating challenge he had to go through. You wouldn't want to lose six of you closest friends in a battle. When his men got eaten by Polyphemus, I think he could have handled that. But he didn't sacrifice the men did. They just got eaten. He had to sacrifice the other six.

I think when Odysseus arrives home and penelope not believing it was him.He went through alot to get home but he had been gone so long that penelope didnt believe he would ever return and when he did she couldnt believe it.

I think the hardest obstacle was Odysseus's wife Penelope not believing him. He had to go through both physical and mental troubles to prove to Penelope that he was actually Odysseus.

I agree with Jordan. Odysseus proving to his wife that he was her husband and not a fake would be the hardest challenge I think. It was hard for Odysseus's wife too because she had not seen him for 20 years and was told to be dead.

Jordan I agree with you also!

I believe the hardest part for Odysseus was when he arrived home from his journey after 20 years and found the suitors trying to marry his wife,Penelope.

To me the event that brought the most challenge to Odysseus was the part when he was trying and fighting the cyclope's to escape out of his cave because the cyclopse was big and powerful.

I think that the hardest obstacle Odysseus faced was trying to prove to Penelope that he was really her husband. I dont think that anything is harder than coming home after twenty years and your wife doesnt even think that you are her husband.

I think his greatest challenge was to convience Penelope that he is really Odysseus. There is nothing else in the story also a factor would be Penelope thinks Odysseus is dead.

Anonymous said...

I agree with sara that was the most difficult challenge.

britbratdacoolcat said...

I think Odysseus's greatest challenge was when he had to convince Penelope to believe him. He put a lot on the line for her and she wouldn't even believe he was Odysseus. That would have made me very upset.

I think as does the majority of the responders think that Odysseu's return home and his wife not believing him was the biggest obstacle to overcome. Who would want their own wife to not believe them. After you risk your life just to get back home she still dosen't believe him. (-_-)-That's so messed up to do that.

I agree with Sarah. Out of all of his journeys and problems that he encounters, like the Cyclops, the Sirens..etc, the thing he is looking forward to the most (and maybe dreading at the same time) is coming home to his beloved wife. (and as corny as it might sound) I think losing Penelope's trust and love is the one challenge he would never overcome, let alone accept. Maybe this is because the whole reason for his "Odyssey" is to actually see Peneolope. Therefore, fear of not having her may be from his love...OR he might just not want to lose the very outcome he had expected after such a long journey and experience away from his home.

Dr.Dre good point, but I sort of thought as Odysseus as a selfish person so that wouldn't probally effect him alot.

Anonymous said...

oops... :[
ps- ¥ for channings sake and
I think that the factors that contributed to the difficulty of not having Penelope recognize him at first are:
INternal- hes become a new man
EXternal- 20 years has aged him

Same thing as Alex-n-Briana said a very good way to sum it up.

i think the hardest obstacle was proving to penelope that it was really he with her not seeing him in almost 20 years.

I believe the greatest Obstical that Odysseus had to overcome was to prove to Penelope that even though he had changed alot over the time that he was gone his journey that he was really just the same person.

Ke'onna said...

Jordan that was the hardest obstacle because how would you feel if you were trying to prove something to someone and they dont believe you so i agree with you.

britbratdacoolcat said...

sarah, i agree with you. when penelope did not believe odysseus that was probably the most difficult thing he had to go through. i would have been very upset with her too.

britbratdacoolcat said...

alex, i like your comment alot too. you made it right down to the point and it made sense because i can relate to what you are saying

sarah said...

I agree with daren it was the hardest obstacle.

I agree with jordan :)

I think his greatest challenge was getting Penelope to believe him. People has been disguised as him in the past so she probably thought someone was trying to trick her again.

Anonymous said...

The greatest obstacle was i think was knowing..that he is home but no one thinks he is alive.. i mean if someone didn't show up to their family for 20 years... and a long lost world like The Odyssey how can convice someone your alive or how can you know who your are from then and n ow.. IT 's amazing how Odysseus was not just a king but a farther..and a myth.

Anonymous said...

The greatest obstacle that odysseus faced was when he had to choose whether to travel past Scylla or Charybidis. He could either lose some of his men and continue or sink his ship and die. This gave him something to think about.

Anonymous said...

The obstacle that presented the biggest challenge was the obstacle with the Cyclops. This was the biggest challenge because not only was the Cyclops stronger, he had already eaten some of Odysseus's men. Unlike some of the other challenges, Odysseus has m ore of a chance of dying.
