Odysseus symbolizes the one who travels and Penelope symbolizes the one who waits at home in relation to the journey. Who do you think has the harder role? Why?

To me they both have a hard role because Odyssues has trouble physically and Penelope has problems emotionally. Odysseus encounter so many problems throughout his journey to get home. Odysseus gets hurt physically because of mistakes he makes throughout his journey like the Cyclops for example, because of his curiousity he know loses some of his men and has to figure out how to escape. Another example is when his men lie to Odysseus and his men say they would not kill Helios cattle, but they kill some of the cattle because they are hungry. Because of this Helios finds out and threatens Zeus that he will shine among the dead instead of the living if he does not punish Odysseus men and so Zeus asks him not to and so what he does is throw a thunderbolt at Odysseus shp with him on board the ship. On Penelopes' side she gets hurt mentally because she misses her husband. I think Penelope has it worse because she had to wait so much just for Odysseus to return. Emotional hurts more than physical.
Well I think that they were both pretty hard to do.
Odysseus is out traveling and fighting and stuff and could possibly get killed while Penelope is at home, and most likely VERY worried because she doesn't even know if her husband is even alive anymore or if he is ever coming back.
They both are hard, just one is more physically while one is more emotionally.
I think both were very hard but if i had to choose one i would choose, penelope.
I know i couldn't wait at home for sll those years not even knowing if the one i love is still alive and i know she would have to get lonely and have nothing to do, at least Odysseus was fighting and that could have helped keep his mind off of penelope as much but all penelope had to do was sit around and wait.
Jamie. That is very true what you said and i dont think i could have did what penelope did and ii think that Odysseus wasn't the only hero it takes alot to wait that long for the one you love.
Israel. I agree, but like i any sport you have to get there mentally before you can get there physically. It harder to get the mental part, because you have to tell, know, and do. The telling is pretty hard when everyone around you is saying your true love is dead but she still believed and didn't remarry.
It is harder for the one who travels because he has to go all of these places and he oculd get lost somewhere that he has never been but when you stay at home there is no way you can get lost.
I think Penelope had the hardest role. She never knew what was happening or if Odysseus was even alive. Penelope waited twenty years with out ever hearing any news of Odysseus. Odysseus knew that his wife would be alright.
I think that being Penelope would have ben harder because she had to go through so many years without anything giving her any hope of seeing Odyyseus again. Also she couldn't do anything to help bring him home again. Odysseus does have it pretty hard physically but he has something to hold onto, he can work to get out of the messes he puts himself in to get home.
From facts from the story "The Odyssey" I would say Odysseus has the harder task because of all the challenges he went through that deal with physical and mental strength. Also Penelope had to do was to stay home and wait for him.
Personally i think Penelope had the hardest time coping with Odysseus not being there. There was nothing she could do but hope that her husband was safe. But Odysseus on the other hand knew that she was alright and was focused on getting back home to be with her. Isreal-What do you mean they both had a hard role it's obvious that Penelope had the hardest time coping.
I think Odysseus had the harder role because he went through physical and mental obsticles. He spends twenty years trying to get back to his wife and son. He has been plagued by the trials of the Gods many times. Almost all of his men have died, and he thinks that it is his fault.
I believe both of the characters have a hard and dreedful role, but at the same time I also believe Odysseus has the harder role to the fact that he's on the go 24/7 and his life is always on the line.
I think odysseus had the harder role because he has to go through many mental, emotional and physical challenges. On the other hand penelope just has to go through emotional challenges even though she is at home and she misses odysseus and is waiting for him.You have to remember odysseus misses her just as much and is going through the same pain she is and he still has to go through battle and physical journey's.
I think it is very hard for penelope and odysseus.Odysseus has to overcome many mental and physical problems on his journey.Penelope has to take care of the house and animals plus raise a child then deal with the emotional stress of her husband being gone.
I think Odysseus has the harder role because he is the one with all the pressure of traveling on his shoulders while Penelope can stay home with her friends.
I think Odysseus's part of the story was hardest to deal with too. Like BJ said, his challenge was Physical and Mental. He was dealing with the fact that he may never get home to Ithica and his wife and son again. And he was fighting monsters, such as Polyphemus, Scylla and the whirlpool called Charybdis. I mean, Penelope had it hard too, being seperated from her husband for 20 years and fending off impostors and suitors.. but I truly think that Odysseus had it a little harder than her.
I think Odysseus has the harder role because he is fighting for his life against creatures that only people dream of and Penelope is sitting at home waving baskets.
Odysseus has it harder because he has to go out in the dangers of the world and put his life on the line. All Penelope does is sit there at home and wait on Odysseus.
i believe the both have a hard role because Odysseus is traveling and has to overcome challenges of many different things and Penelope has to say at home and take care af everybody and everything at home.
I believe that they are equally split. Odysseus seems to have a harder role because he has the physical end of the deal, fighting for his life and a way back home, but on the other hand Penelope is on the emontional side, leaving her at home for 20 years wondering if Odysseus is alive and well, hurt, or possibly dead which can really hurt somebody mentally.
sorry ivy, but i dont agree with you. i think that if your waiting for someone you truley love, but being told that he is dead, and being forced to choose a new husband that you have no feelings for, is alot worse than leaving home in the first place and putting your life on the line because of oneself own stupidity and curiosity.
The waitng. or the emotional journey home is effected on both sides.. They are both waiting both taking journeys in their life tyrying to find the other. 20 years .. But i think its harder for Penelope because she thinks Odysseus is dead while Odysseus nows she is still waiting for him.. SHe has less hope..
I believe they both had it hard. But, Penepole had to live the harder life. Going to bed every night not knowing what was going on and she had to live all those years without her husband. At least, he could find things to do to keep him busy and to keep his mind off of her while she had to sit around 24/7 and just wait.
I think Penelope has the harder role because, I mean, think about it. Would you rather go out on this wild journey, have crazy adventures, yet still have fun but endure great dangers(Odysseus)... OR ... have to wit home and hope and pray to God that by any chance or luck or love your one true love will finally come home un-harmed while you've got all of these suitors trying to marry you and get all of your fortunes, telling you it's too late, that your husband is dead (Penelope)? I'd choose the first one personally.
I think that Penelope has the harder role because Odysseus is out traveling see the world while all she can do is wait at home and hope the Odysseus is being safe and alright.
I think that Penelope has the harder role because Odysseus is out traveling see the world while all she can do is wait at home and hope the Odysseus is being safe and alright.
I think Penelope has the harder role. she has to sit around and just wait. she believes her husband is probably dead or lost and never returning. there are suitors bugging her and her is son is gone looking for his father. so i believe she completely has the harder role here.
isreal youre completely right. emotional pain hurts way worst than physical pain physical pain will eventually heal but sometimes that emotional pain never goes away. plus alot of odyssues' pain was his own fault penelope had no control over hers.
Jamie I disagree with you on disagreeing with Wren because if truely love someone then you would never get remarried and you will wait for the person you love even if you have to wait forever. So I am going to agree with Wren, sorry Jamie.
I think Penelope has the harder role. Of course, it's hard for both of them because they love eachother and they are away from eachother. But Penelope is doing nothing but waiting, waiting for her soulmate to come back home to her. How can she sit at home and not be able to do anything? I know I wouldnt- couldn't do that.
I think they both have a hard role. Odysseus has a hard mental and physical role, because he has to fight the creatures and has to take losing some of his crew members. Also being away from his family makes his role hard.Penelope has a hard role, because everyday that Odysseus is gone she has to hope that he'll make it back home.
I belive that they both have a difficult role to undertake. Odysseus is the one who must fight and defend himself while trying to make it home to his wife, son, and kingdom. Then again Penelope must face the challenge of keeping the kingdom running and try to atleast attempt to control the house that she and the suitors live in. The role that is most difficult is shared by both characters, they both must deal with the longing to see and spend time sith one another.

I think odysseus has the harder role because he has to pick who travels becasue he dont know what obstacles he will undertake
I think Oddysseus's role was harder because he had both mental and physical trouble.
Mentally because he had to deal with the deaths of his men and Physically because he had to fight all the monsters.

I think Penelope does because she has to sit home and worry the whole time if he is going to get killed.

jamie i think that is a good response both are very hard role in a relationship

Wren I disagree.
When you love someone, you don't want to have to wait and worry about them for twenty years.
I mean you have NO idea what happend to him.

I think Penelope because she waited at home for twenty years thinking her husband is dead.
I also agree with anonymous.

yes israel, both penelope and odysseus had a hard journey. i do agree with you.
