I think spiderman is a story abot a hero that has to save people. They are similar because they both have to fight bad people and save others. they both have difficult villians but i think all together Odysseus has the worst.
i know this may sound ridiculous but the only thing i can think of as another hero would be captain underpants. he goes through struggle and changing just like odysseus does. the difference is captain underpants fights crime and odysseus fights mythological creatures.
hey, the story book hero that captures my eyes is actually x-men
creatures, powers sorta similar to the gods and Odysseus. In every superhero story theres leaders and followers and sometimes the followers want to lead and it doesn't work out. X-men is a group of special power mortals but he catch is their is a villain in x-men , i wouldn't consider Odysseus having a single villain
Harry Potter. He goes on a journey in every story. His journeys are similar to Odysseus's because they both fight mythical creatures, and they are trying to reach a certain goal. It is different also, because Harry is a wizard, and Odysseus is a soldier. Harry isn't trying to get home either.
Ms. Singleton, quick question, do I have to repeat this blog since I already answered it as a warm-up when we had a sub. If I do can I have my sheet back so I can copy it onto this blog?
I COMPLETELY agree with you mathew. This has to be the best comparison. No offense to you other guys. There is one question though, do you think Harry is a better leader than Odysseus?????
One story that tells of a hero's actions is The Lightning Theif. Both stories tell about a big adventure. The main characters in both stories are Gods.
Hippoyta and the Curse of the Amazons. It's similar because in both the same gods are inaffering with the journeys, but in hippoyta she is able to get around the god's plans and make it home with her younger brother.
I am glad that you all can make the connection between the Odyssey and heroes frrom other stories, but you are not answering the entire question. Name other stories you know that tell of a hero's adventures while on a journey. How is their journey similar to and different from The Odyssey?
One other story of a hero is the journey of percy jackson in the olympians book series. His journey is similiar because he too faces greek gods and many of the same situations that Odysseus has.
One story I know is Spiderman. He goes on a journey to save his girlfriend and end up saving her. To me that's a hero. His journey was different than Odyseus's because he didn't have men fighting with him. He was fighting alone. It is similar to Odyseus's because they both went on a journey.
Another story that tells of a hero and his/her adventures are superman, spiderman and batman.Their journey is similiar by them having to make difficult choices and is different by it being realistic because humans cannot fly and they dont have super powers.
The only story I can think of is Hercules. It is similar to The Odyssey because they both fight mythical creatures and they have both made a god mad at them. The difference between the two stories is that Hercules is alone and Odysseus had his own crew.
To anonymous: About th equestion you gave Mathew, do you think Harry is a better leader than Odysseus, I think Harry is a better leader because Harry is more cautious about the dangers and in the 5th and 7th books Harry didn't want his Friends to come alonger because he didn't want them to get hurt. Also Harry seemed to really care about the people around him(the other students and the wizard community not the Death Eaters). So i think Harry was a better leader.
Some of the books I have read that tell about a hero's journey include the book "Holes." In this book, the two main characters use thier advantage of intelligence to get out of the trouble they got themselves into as what Odyyseus did when he was on his journey.
The movie 300 is about the king of the spartan's takes 300 of his best men and go to war with the persian army which has over a million men.He makes his most crucial mistake by not taking more men with him even though they are thought to be the best in the world. He eventually falls to his death but the spartan's return with even more powerful army to defeat the Persians.
well i have read alot stories like The Odyssey but it is kinda hard to remember much of them but they are similiar to The Odyssey because they explain the main character having to go through a series of battles or adventures to get where he/she wants to go. Oh wait i remember one of the stories that i read that was similiar to the Odyssey it was the series of books called the Guardian Owl or something like that. But anyways off subject um some things that differ from The Odyssey and Guardian Owl are....in The Odyssey they have to go through these great battles ex. cyclops etc. and well in Guardian Owl they have to save the race of owls from being transformed into clones.
ginger-haha captin underpants my cousin reads that but anyways i totally agree with you
Looking at everybody else i cant believe i forgot about so many heroes but compared to the oddysey the first thing that i could think of is hercules. both hercules and odysseus fight mythological creatures to make up for some huge mistake that they made in there lives. although their mistakes differed they both managed to correct their problems and go back to their original lives, for odysseus it was to go on a 20 year voyage to face strange monsters. for hercules, it was to perform 12 tasks to make up for slaughtering his entire family due to madness caused by one of the greek gods Hera).
Hercules is a good hero because they both fought strange creatures and both had a great god man at then. But they are different because in hercules he didn't get as many people killed as Odysseus.
An adventure with mythological creatures, the book "Eragon" in the book Eragon travels whith his dragon and an elf headed to the mountains, on the way he faces monsters and he travels through the desert. He is fugitive to an evil kingdom to start a rebelion.
Another story i know of that is similar to The Odyssey is Naruto a japanese anime. It is similar in a way because he tries to become the head ninja or Hokage of his village. He goes through challenges just like Odysseus just not againist mythological forces thats all. Thats really the only difference between the two stories.
Also in Meet the Spartans the leader had to venture out to try to become a hero fighting against the persians. But even after they won the battle they lost doing something dumb.
Another story that tells of a hero's adventures while on a journey is Hercules. His journey is similar to the Odyssey because both are physical journeys. It is different because fo the time period. I think Hercules was before the Odyssey.
A hero i would say would be harry potter because he shares some of the same qualities and traits that odysseus does. He too is stubborn and full of and ego. His curiosity also gets him and his friends into trouble along the way. His leadership can get them out of it most of the time. Unlike odysseus though he has many others who approve of his ways rather than disaprove.
The only other story i can really think about that has a hero in it similar to Odysseus is Hercules. I believe that they are similar because they both have gods in the stories and of course they're both heros whos egos get them into trouble. They're different because they whole story lines are different, Odyssues is trying to get home while running into all kinds of obstical[[which he creates most of them]] and Hercules is finding out hes a god and trying to save his town and himself from Haydees.
I think the story of spiderman is similar to this because spiderman is a the hero in this story he is saving different people and odysseus is the hero in The odyssey.
Maleeke, You are right when you say that there is a difference between odysseus and superman , batman, and spider man because humans can't fly. But what about the traits that they share or don't share aside from super powers, that anybody could attain?
I just read a great book called The Sea of Trolls. Thanks to the one who recommended it to me!!! The lead character's name is Jack. He is only eleven, but the journeys he undertakes give him opportunities to make wise, heroic descisions. However, he makes these descisions quickly and accurately, so I believe he is also a leader. In my opinion, Odysseus is a hero. But he names himself a hero, and because he wants to be the leader, there is less respect to him. Anybody can be a hero, but a true leader is born that way, and the character Jack is such. The Odyssey has much more force and dignity to its journey. But Jack's journey accross the Sea of Trolls was unlimited and adventured unwillingly. Jack had no idea where he was or where he was going but he made the best of his situation and helped others through the journey, too.
I think any superhero story such as spiderman or superman would relate to Odysseus and his journeys. I feel this way because in ever superhero story, someone comes in to save the day just like Odysseus did. These stories are like those of Odysseus because they are both very adventurous and they take alot of courage to get through them succesfully. Although, these stories are alot alike the ones in the Odyssey, they also have their differences. Odysseus had many problems on his journey like running his mouth at the wrong time and getting himself into more trouble than necessary. The other characters played the game smart and got out safely while he was still faced with the continuous trials and tribulations. These are just two stories that are alike those of the Odyssey but there are many more out there.
Alex, Since odyesseus and spiderman both went on a journey what kind of journey was it. was it a physical or mental journey? what did they encounter? Since Odysseus had men on his side did he have the upper hand or did spiderman's humble morals help him to become a well known hero?
Another story that tells of a hero's adventures is HERCULES, the journey is simular because they both want to get home and face mnay obstacles aong the way thattry to stop them from reaching thier goals
Spiderman is a hero because he helps the people he loves and the people he doesnt even know.He goes through some rough times fighting the villians but he always overcomes his problems and defeats the villian.
Ginger i also have to agree with you in a way captain underpants is a hero he faces all the dongers in the school and helps everyone out although his troubles arent as servere as everyone elses he still has troubles to overcome.
oh and ginger you know you stole captain underpants from me! ♥ just kidding... dj and blanding you guys are having somewhat of a conversation there... good job...? i agree that spiderman and x-men and robin hood are heroes. but mostly i think that harry potter and hercules are similar to odysseus. All fight mythical creatures, their stories are fate-viewed and sorry, but always, the heroes' stories keep us on our toes, holding our breath, filled with magical excitement, and I agree that Captain Underpants can give that feeling, as well. I think. :)
H. York!! I like your comparison. I totally get what you're saying. I've never read the book, but the evidence you provide is enough. Maybe I'll TRY and read the book AGAIN
Spiderman is a hero. They both fight villians and big ugly creatures, but spiderman sometimes lets his feels get in the way. Odysseus doesn't really care about saving no one else but himself.
Although its weird that the first hero that comes to your mind is Gorge of the Jungle i totaly agree with you he does save the apes and in my opinion if you have enough courage to try to save anyone at all and you suceed you are a hero,...and to me even moms and dads are heros...i mean think of all the troubles they have to face and all the stress they have to deal with in order to protect and take care of their children
Genesis, i agree spiderman does let his feelings get in the way but that could be considered a good thing because it helps him to save the ones he loves instead of just letting everyone die.
Sarah, I have to disagree with you on that one odysseus doesnt let his feelings get in the way because all he really cares about is getting home and his ego is too big for his feelings to get in the way of anything.
A series of books that i enjoy are the "Hardy Boys". These are mystery books that are about two brothers ,Frank, who is 17 years old, and Joe, who is 16 years old, who help their father a detecitve who always has a mystery on their hand.(Who does that remind you of:hint Scooby-doo and the mystery gang!)These two boys and Odyseuss are similar because they always undertake an adventure and end up getting themselves in trouble. They both act wisely and make mistakes. One of the books I read was " The Boomerang Bay". In this story they help their father, as always, but, Joe is captured because of Frank. Israel

spiderman..
he saves mary jane from doc. octopus. he did make some mistakes though buy partially giving up his identity. but he fixed his mitake.

Ginger, captain underpants? Hey, but your right, they do resemble each other. Can you think of another hero that resembles Odysseus?????
I COMPLETELY agree with you mathew. This has to be the best comparison. No offense to you other guys. There is one question though, do you think Harry is a better leader than Odysseus?????
The book that that has a journey was Robin hood. He had to venture out stealing food for the poor he was really a hero.

The story I like is the book Brians Winter. The boy brian makes alot of mistakes but recovers from them.
Jordan,
You need to answer the last part of the question.
A book i enjoy is Babe Ruth the King of Baseball. It shows that he is the best baseball player ever and it shows that he overcomes his fears.
The only story I can think of is Hercules. It is similar to The Odyssey because they both fight mythical creatures and they have both made a god mad at them. The difference between the two stories is that Hercules is alone and Odysseus had his own crew.

I'm not much of a reader.
But there are ALOT of stories with Hero's in them.
I've read where people are talking about Spiderman, and people like that.
I completely agree with them.
Jordan tell how the book you really like relates to the Odyssey.

Simba in the Lion King had to make a really difficult journey to defeat his uncle and regain his rightful place on the throne as king of Pride Rock.
On this journey only one good person died but on Odysseus's journey many people died.
Both these journeys include a main character with quick thinking and a good heart.(and animals)
Hercules is a good hero because they both fought strange creatures and both had a great god man at then. But they are different because in hercules he didn't get as many people killed as Odysseus.

I also think eragon is a really good book showing lots of courage and leadership.
Yeah they were cornered and had no way out but they still stood and fought like real soilders do.
blanding i dont beleive they fought like real soilders.
real soilders dont fight with dance.
Another story that tells of a hero's adventures while on a journey is Hercules. His journey is similar to the Odyssey because both are physical journeys. It is different because fo the time period. I think Hercules was before the Odyssey.

Most of you will probably
laugh, but the hero that comes to
my mind is George of the
Jungle. Both George and
Odysseus have to save the ones
they care for. George, on the
other hand has to save a bunch of
apes from predators, while Odysseus
has to save his ship mates from
terrifying, mythical creatures. One
of the things the shipmates and
apes have in common is that they
both are prey. But, like I just
said, one is prey for mythical
creatures, the other for predatos
such as jaguires. (Is that how
you spell it?)
Alburtus even though Odysseus has men and hercules dont,in the end odysseus ends up alone too so you really have to think about that
Another story that tells of a hero's adventures is HERCULES, the journey is simular because they both want to get home and face mnay obstacles aong the way thattry to stop them from reaching thier goals
Ms.Huhs,
that is a little differnt but in the end their journeys are alike and kboth have to protect the ones that are with them.
Zach, me and you think alike because spiderman is a hero and he is similar to odysseus.
Spiderman is a hero because he helps the people he loves and the people he doesnt even know.He goes through some rough times fighting the villians but he always overcomes his problems and defeats the villian.

that is so true both character fights against other obstacles and both let their feelings get in the way.
